We Are Changing the Culture, One Day at a Time

Hello NMS Families,
We hope you are having a wonderful start to the month of December. As we move through the final weeks of the semester, we are grateful for your continued partnership in supporting our students and helping our school community remain strong, positive, and focused.

Rainy Day Reminders for Families

As we move into the rainy season, we want to share a few important reminders to help keep students safe, comfortable, and respectful on campus.
Students may use the cafeteria and covered outdoor areas to eat lunch and stay dry during wet weather. The library will also be open for students who would like a quiet place to read or study. Please note that food and drinks are not allowed in the library.
Some teachers may choose to open their classrooms during rainy days. If a classroom is open, students should remain inside until the bell rings and are expected to clean up after themselves.
For safety and visibility, students may wear their hoods up only while it is actively raining. Once students are inside or the rain stops, hoods must be taken down.
Thank you for your continued support in helping our students make safe and respectful choices during the rainy season.

Celebrating Our NMS Scholars

At Newark Middle School, we are proud to shine a light on the many amazing students who make our campus such a positive place to learn and grow. Each week, our administrative team will be personally calling at least five families to share good news and celebrate students who are doing great things on campus. If you receive one of these calls, please know it is simply to share something wonderful about your young scholar and the positive impact they are making at NMS. We believe it is just as important to celebrate success as it is to address challenges, and we look forward to making these positive connections with our families.

Weekly PSA

Each Thursday during Advisory, teachers play the Weekly PSA video for students as a way to build connection, celebrate learning, and reinforce positive school culture across campus. This week’s PSA highlighted Diwali, the Festival of Lights, and included a fun introduction to sign language for students. These weekly moments allow us to connect with students in meaningful, positive ways while also celebrating diversity, kindness, and community at Newark Middle School.

Bikemobile Comes to NMS

We are excited to welcome Bikemobile back to Newark Middle School on Tuesday, December 9, from 2:45 to 5:15 p.m. This is a great opportunity for students and families to bring their bicycles to campus for free repairs and tune-ups. Please remind your child to bring their bike on this day if they would like to take advantage of this service. More details will be shared soon through flyers. Spread the word and ride safely.

Teacher Spotlight of the Week: Ms. Carole Rose

This week, we are proud to spotlight one of our dedicated and inspiring educators, Ms. Carole Rose. Ms. Rose has spent many years serving students with care, passion, and a deep commitment to helping young people grow both academically and personally. Her journey to teaching and her love for students shines through in every classroom she serves. We are grateful to highlight her story and the heart she brings to Newark Middle School.

What inspired you to become a teacher, and why middle school?
When I was growing up school was where I could feel I had a safe place. I loved all of my teachers. As I had children of my own I volunteered in their classes. I also worked as a girl scout leader for 12 years. I enjoyed working with children and enriching their lives. I feel teaching has given me a path to support children in showing them education has many paths and will give them power.
I actually started going to Ohlone and became a teacher after having my 4 children. What started this journey was that my family hosted a Japanese exchange student, Daisuke, for one month who was sixteen. After his visit I enrolled in Ohlone College to learn conversational Japanese. Daisuke had very limited English. I asked Daisuke to write to me in Japanese so I could try to translate his letters. LOL! I did love going to these classes so much I enrolled in a couple of the required classes: Algebra 1 and English 101A. I kept chipping away at the classes for about 9 years until I became a teacher.
I taught either 5th or 6th grade at elementary school for 20 years. I moved to middle school when the 6th grade moved. This is our 4th year.

What’s your favorite part about working at NMS?
My favorite part of working at NMS is witnessing the growth of the students over the 3 years they are here. I love when former students come by to say hello and tell me how they are doing in school. I am inspired to see how they mature into independent young adults.

If you weren’t a teacher, what other job could you see yourself doing?
I love the outdoors and I love art. I often wonder what it would have been like to study drafting. Otherwise I would be a scientist studying something in the environment.

What was your favorite subject or teacher when you were in middle school?
I like being creative. The one class I really enjoyed because it was out of my comfort zone was rowing on a CREW team. I was on an 8 person boat and we practiced at Berkeley Aquatic Park. We never won and that is ok because the process was the most fun. Building relationships with the coaches and my teammates.

Do you have a fun fact or hidden talent most people don’t know about you?
One fact that is fun to share is that the actor Tom Hanks is my 2nd cousin. Even though I never had the opportunity to meet him. I had dinner with his mom at my grandmother's house and she came to my wedding.

What’s your favorite book, movie, or TV show that you think middle schoolers would enjoy too?
I have a lot of favorite books. One that I think middle schoolers might like is “House of the Scorpion” by Nancy Farmer. Ms. Farmer is a resident of Menlo Park. It is a science fiction story about a boy who is a clone.

If you could take the whole school on a field trip anywhere, where would it be and why?
I think Yellow Stone National Park in Wyoming. It is the best place to witness many geothermal features. Visiting helped me to understand more fully how the systems of Earth are amazing and complex.

What advice would you give to students to make the most of middle school?
Each of you are wonderfully made and created with a purpose.
The choices you make are important. Try new things!!!
Ask lots of questions and think for yourself. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, that is how we learn.

Leaders and Readers Partnership Launching Soon

We are excited to share that Newark Middle School will be launching our new Leaders and Readers community literacy partnership with Coyote Hills Elementary in the coming weeks. Through this program, selected NMS Leadership students will serve as reading mentors for younger students by walking to Coyote Hills to read and build positive connections. This meaningful partnership supports literacy growth, leadership development, and strong ties between our schools. More details and permission slips will be sent home to participating families soon.

Upcoming Leadership Events

Winter Wonderland Dance

Our Winter Dance is quickly approaching, and this is one of the most exciting student events of the season. Students are invited to join us for an afternoon of music, fun, and school spirit.
Date: Friday, December 12, 2025
Time: 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Theme: Winter Wonderland
Winter Dance tickets will go on sale starting December 1 and will be available for purchase during lunch through December 11. We strongly encourage students to purchase their tickets early, as this is always a very popular event. Additional details about expectations and guidelines will be shared with students this week.

Leaders and Readers Partnership starting later this month

NMS PTSA

Dear Newark Middle School Families,

As the holiday season approaches, we want to express our immense gratitude for the incredible teachers and staff who do so much for our children every day.

To celebrate their hard work and dedication, the NMS PTSA is hosting a Teacher and Staff Holiday Luncheon on 12/19/25 at 12:15pm (right after the school ends).

We need your help to make this festive feast a success! We are asking for donations of appetizers, desserts, beverages, and raffle prizes to help spread the holiday cheer. We have chafing dishes available if the appetizers need to be kept warm. There are around 100 teachers and staff at the middle school. PTSA will be providing a selection of sandwiches, salads and pies.

How you can help:

Food & Drink: We need appetizers, desserts, and beverages. Please see the sign-up sheet below for specific needs.
Gift Donations: We are putting together door raffle prizes for the staff. If you would like to contribute a small gift, a gift card ($10-$25 amounts are great), or items for a raffle, please drop them off at the front office by Thur 12/18/25.
Help Set Up: 10:30am-12:15pm

Logistics:

Non-perishable items/Gifts: Can be dropped off at the school office by Thursday 12/18 2:45 pm.
Hot/Cold Food: Please bring dishes to NMS Library on Friday 12/19 between 11:30 am-12 pm.
Labeling: Please mark if items are Gluten-Free, Nut-Free, or Vegetarian when appropriate.

Diwali The Festival of Lights

This past week, students learned about Diwali, the Festival of Lights, during our Weekly PSA. Diwali is an important celebration in many cultures and is centered on light over darkness, good over evil, and hope over hardship. Students were introduced to the meaning behind the holiday along with traditions such as lighting diyas and spending time with family and community. We value these moments as opportunities to celebrate cultural awareness, diversity, and connection across our school.

We continue to be incredibly proud of the students of Newark Middle School. Each day, we see our scholars making thoughtful choices, showing kindness, and rising to high expectations. When mistakes happen, our students are learning from them and growing stronger because of it. Estamos Cambiando la Cultura, Un Día a la Vez

Esperamos que estén teniendo un excelente inicio del mes de diciembre. A medida que entramos en las últimas semanas del semestre, agradecemos profundamente su continua colaboración para apoyar a nuestros estudiantes y ayudar a que nuestra comunidad escolar se mantenga fuerte, positiva y enfocada.

Recordatorios para Días Lluviosos para las Familias

A medida que entramos en la temporada de lluvias, queremos compartir algunos recordatorios importantes para mantener a los estudiantes seguros, cómodos y respetuosos en el campus.
Los estudiantes pueden usar la cafetería y las áreas exteriores cubiertas para almorzar y mantenerse secos durante el clima lluvioso. La biblioteca también estará abierta para los estudiantes que deseen un lugar tranquilo para leer o estudiar. Tenga en cuenta que no se permiten alimentos ni bebidas en la biblioteca.
Algunos maestros pueden optar por abrir sus salones durante los días lluviosos. Si un salón está abierto, los estudiantes deben permanecer adentro hasta que suene el timbre y se espera que limpien después de sí mismos.
Por razones de seguridad y visibilidad, los estudiantes solo pueden usar la capucha cuando esté lloviendo activamente. Una vez que estén dentro del edificio o deje de llover, las capuchas deben bajarse.

Celebrando a Nuestros Estudiantes de NMS

En Newark Middle School, estamos orgullosos de destacar a los muchos estudiantes increíbles que hacen de nuestro campus un lugar tan positivo para aprender y crecer. Cada semana, nuestro equipo administrativo estará llamando personalmente a por lo menos cinco familias para compartir buenas noticias y celebrar a estudiantes que están haciendo cosas maravillosas en el campus. Si recibe una de estas llamadas, sepa que es simplemente para compartir algo positivo sobre su joven estudiante y el impacto que está teniendo en NMS. Creemos que es tan importante celebrar los logros como atender los desafíos, y esperamos con gusto seguir creando estas conexiones positivas con nuestras familias.

PSA Semanal

Cada jueves durante el período de Asesoría, los maestros proyectan el video del PSA semanal para los estudiantes como una forma de fortalecer la conexión, celebrar el aprendizaje y reforzar la cultura positiva en todo el campus. El PSA de esta semana destacó Diwali, el Festival de las Luces, e incluyó una divertida introducción al lenguaje de señas para los estudiantes. Estos momentos semanales nos permiten conectarnos con nuestros alumnos de maneras significativas y positivas mientras celebramos la diversidad, la bondad y la comunidad en Newark Middle School.

Bikemobile Llega a NMS

Estamos muy emocionados de dar nuevamente la bienvenida a Bikemobile a Newark Middle School el martes 9 de diciembre, de 2:45 a 5:15 p.m. Esta es una excelente oportunidad para que los estudiantes y familias traigan sus bicicletas para recibir reparaciones y ajustes gratuitos en el campus. Maestra de la Semana: Sra. Carole Rose

Esta semana, nos enorgullece destacar a una de nuestras educadoras dedicadas e inspiradoras, la Sra. Carole Rose. La Sra. Rose ha servido a los estudiantes durante muchos años con cuidado, pasión y un profundo compromiso con su crecimiento académico y personal. Su camino hacia la enseñanza y su amor por los estudiantes se reflejan en cada salón que atiende. Agradecemos poder compartir su historia y el gran corazón que aporta a Newark Middle School.

¿Qué la inspiró a convertirse en maestra y por qué la escuela intermedia?

Cuando yo crecía, la escuela era el lugar donde me sentía segura. Amaba a todos mis maestros. Cuando tuve a mis propios hijos, fui voluntaria en sus salones. También trabajé como líder de Girl Scouts por 12 años. Disfrutaba trabajar con niños y enriquecer sus vidas. Siento que la enseñanza me ha dado el camino para apoyar a los niños y mostrarles que la educación tiene muchos caminos y les dará poder.
Comencé a estudiar en Ohlone después de tener a mis cuatro hijos. El inicio de este camino fue cuando mi familia recibió a un estudiante japonés de intercambio, Daisuke, por un mes cuando tenía 16 años. Después de su visita, me inscribí en Ohlone College para aprender japonés conversacional. Daisuke tenía muy poco inglés y le pedí que me escribiera en japonés para intentar traducir sus cartas. ¡LOL! Disfruté tanto esas clases que me inscribí también en Álgebra 1 e Inglés 101A. Tomé clases por alrededor de 9 años hasta convertirme en maestra.
Enseñé 5.º o 6.º grado en primaria por 20 años. Me cambié a secundaria cuando 6.º grado pasó aquí. Este es nuestro cuarto año.

¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de trabajar en NMS?

Mi parte favorita de trabajar en NMS es ver el crecimiento de los estudiantes a lo largo de los tres años que están aquí. Me encanta cuando exalumnos vienen a saludar y contarme cómo les va en la escuela. Me inspira ver cómo maduran y se convierten en jóvenes adultos independientes.

Si no fuera maestra, ¿qué otro trabajo se imagina haciendo?

Me encanta estar al aire libre y también me encanta el arte. A menudo me pregunto cómo habría sido estudiar dibujo técnico. De lo contrario, sería científica estudiando algo del medio ambiente.

¿Cuál fue su materia o maestro favorito en la secundaria?

Me gusta ser creativa. La clase que más disfruté, porque estaba fuera de mi zona de confort, fue remar en un equipo de remo. Estaba en un bote de ocho personas y practicábamos en el Parque Acuático de Berkeley. Nunca ganamos, y eso estuvo bien porque el proceso fue lo más divertido: construir relaciones con los entrenadores y compañeros.

¿Tiene algún dato curioso o talento oculto que pocas personas conocen?

Un dato curioso es que el actor Tom Hanks es mi primo segundo. Aunque nunca lo conocí, cené con su mamá en la casa de mi abuela y ella asistió a mi boda.

¿Libro, película o programa favorito que también recomendaría a estudiantes de secundaria?

Cada uno de ustedes fue creado con un propósito.
Las decisiones que toman son importantes. ¡Prueben cosas nuevas!
Hagan muchas preguntas y piensen por sí mismos. No tengan miedo de cometer errores, así es como aprendemos.

Programa Leaders and Readers Próximamente

Nos complace compartir que Newark Middle School estará lanzando nuestro nuevo programa comunitario de alfabetización “Leaders and Readers” con Coyote Hills Elementary en las próximas semanas. A través de este programa, estudiantes de liderazgo de NMS servirán como mentores de lectura para estudiantes más pequeños, caminando hasta Coyote Hills para leer y construir conexiones positivas. Este programa apoya el crecimiento en la lectura, el desarrollo del liderazgo y el fortalecimiento de la comunidad. Muy pronto se enviarán más detalles y los permisos a las familias participantes.

Baile Winter Wonderland

Nuestro Baile de Invierno se acerca rápidamente y es uno de los eventos estudiantiles más esperados de la temporada. Los estudiantes están invitados a disfrutar de una tarde de música, diversión y espíritu escolar.

Más detalles sobre expectativas y normas se compartirán esta semana con los estudiantes.

Diwali – El Festival de las Luces

Esta semana, los estudiantes aprendieron sobre Diwali, el Festival de las Luces, durante nuestro PSA semanal. Diwali es una celebración importante en muchas culturas y representa la luz sobre la oscuridad, el bien sobre el mal y la esperanza sobre las dificultades. Los estudiantes conocieron el significado de esta festividad y tradiciones como encender diyas y compartir en familia y comunidad. Valoramos estos momentos como oportunidades para celebrar la diversidad, la conciencia cultural y la conexión en nuestra escuela.

Seguimos estando inmensamente orgullosos de los estudiantes de Newark Middle School. Cada día vemos a nuestros alumnos tomar buenas decisiones, mostrar amabilidad y esforzarse por alcanzar altas expectativas. Cuando cometen errores, están aprendiendo de ellos y creciendo como personas.
